Every year, I sit down with my kids and pick 10 stocks to buy and hold for 12 months. I began this to teach them about investing and what I do for a living.
It’s worked well for finances and family bonding. Now, the rules are: 10 stocks for 12 months, no trading or options—just buy and hold. At year-end, we review and adjust.
Turning to this year’s picks for 2025, I chose Starbucks, Uber, Amazon, The Gap, Peloton, Aritzia, Stitch Fix, Build-A-Bear, On-Holdings, and Sketchers (which didn’t survive the year after going private in April).
The portfolio gained about 26%, beating the S&P 500 handily and smoking the XLY Consumer Discretionary ETF:
