The NYSE Weekly New Highs minus New Lows reading has moved to -37.
That means more NYSE stocks made fresh 52-week lows than fresh 52-week highs. After 15 straight weeks of green readings, this is the first negative print.
Here’s the chart:
Let's break down what the chart shows:
The black line in the top panel shows the NYSE Composite.
The green and red bars in the lower panel show NYSE Weekly New Highs minus New Lows.
Green bars mean more NYSE stocks are making weekly new highs than weekly new lows.
Red bars mean more NYSE stocks are making weekly new lows than weekly new highs.
The Takeaway: -37 is not a big number on its own, but context changes the message.
The NYSE Composite is still sitting near all-time highs, so price has not broken down. That is the first thing I care about. Price comes first. And right now, price is still saying the broader trend remains intact.
But breadth has stopped confirming with the same force.
After 15 weeks of positive new highs minus new lows readings, the first red print means participation has cooled. More stocks are making weekly lows than weekly highs, even while the index itself remains elevated.
That is not a disaster.
But it is a change in behavior beneath the surface.
One red reading can be noise. Markets pause, and leadership rotates. Weak hands get shaken out. But if red readings start to cluster while the index keeps pushing near highs, the message changes.
That would mean fewer stocks are carrying the market.
That is what I’ll be watching from here... Do new highs expand again quickly? Or do red readings continue? If breadth flips back green, this may simply be a pause in a healthy uptrend. If weakness keeps spreading, risk appetite is fading beneath the surface.
So I’m not treating this as a sell signal.
I’m treating it as a reason to narrow my focus.
Stay involved with the trend, but get more selective. Focus on the strongest names. Be less forgiving with laggards.
For now, this is another yellow light.
Not red.
Not green.
The next clue is whether this red print is a one-week wobble, or the start of a broader change in participation.
